Leaders of Britain, what did you do?

Leaders of Britain, what did you do
When the EU referendum was lost and won?
Oh that your counsel had been honest and true.
Leaders of Britain, what have you done?

David Cameron, for party advantage you gambled your nation,
After what you loosely termed renegotiation.
You tried to scare the voters into obedient submission,
And you lost.
You lost too a place in the PMs’ Hall of Fame.
With Anthony Eden and his Suez catastrophe
With Neville Chamberlain and his piece of paper,
You booked your dungeon in the Tower of Shame.

Boris Johnson, did selfish ambition determine your position?
Was it just a game to you, a game you wanted narrowly to lose?
So as you swallowed the bitter ashes of success,
You had no plan.
"Et tu, Gove”, is your cry as you’re stabbed in the back.
But no Caesar are you, that is not your calibre.
In the Foreign Office now, precede your words with thought,
Or this Cabinet career will be embarrassingly short.

Nigel Farage, was victory your aim at any price?
Never mind the hatred, never mind the lies.
You won the voting: could you have spared us the gloating?
And there is a cost.
Brexit “without a bullet fired”, you said.
The thought of Jo Cox never entered your head.
Did you forget the “U” in UKIP stands for “united”?
We’ve never been so divided, and we may yet lose the Scots.

Jeremy Corbyn, Labour chose to support Remain,
But with only half a heart did you bother to campaign.
Mandated, you say, by a large majority, how can you lead so small a minority
Of Labour MPs?
Survival now your aim at the expense of your party,
Resignation not your path, just bitter division.
You have at least achieved some rehabilitation
Of Michael Foot, next to you a political colossus.

Nicola Sturgeon, your SNP took a clear Remain position:
Whatever England’s road, yours a European nation.
Now, Scotland dissenting, the vote was to leave, and you believe
That losing, you’ve won,
Oil price notwithstanding, the prize of independence.
Yet to you is given vision that beyond these narrow shores extends,
Think now upon this realm entire, and later best preserve historic Union,
But if reluctantly a parting must ensue, then let it be as friends.

Theresa May, beneath the flag of Remain you remained in your tent.
Was this just the way it was or careful calculation
That this would carry you to glorious coronation
As Prime Minister?
A rocky economy, Scotland, Ireland, Brexit negotiations,
Putin, jihadists, Trump perhaps, a world in pain,
A country splintered, needing healing, you have a task
At which succeeding you stand to gain a stellar reputation.

People of Britain, wherever you placed your cross
When the country voted Brexit – farewell EU,
Abandoning our unity will bring us grievous loss.
People of Britain, now what will you do?
